The most cultural and pedagogical 3D digitisation. The Giravolt project of the Catalan Agency for Cultural Heritage aims to digitise the collections of different catalan museums, with the aim of making them consultable and open to everyone, facilitating their study and dissemination while preserving them, creating a digital archive. Photogrammetry allows us to create 3D digital copies of each artpiece.

    Photogrammetry.

    Capture by connecting photos.

This technique allows us to create digital copies by taking photographs from differents angles and camera positions. These photos are placed in a digital space after matching points with each other to create a volume. For the capture, the object is illuminated with diffuse and homogeneous light. A scale ruler and a colour chart are used to correctly size each piece and ensure that the texture matches the original model.

A leap into the digital dimension.

The 60 digitisized artworks can now be easily disseminated, studied and archived.

The result is the production of around sixty digital copies of objects from collections from different museums in Catalonia. In this edition, the main themes when selecting the pieces to be digitised have been the role of women in society, sustainability and the educational activities carried out by each museum. These are very varied pieces in terms of materials, finishes and dimensions. Once the digital copies have been created, their level of preservation also increases.

    Capturing every detail.

    Dimensions, morphology, texture and finishes.

The number of photos and their resolution are decisive to achieve a faithful copy of the original. In one specific case, 950 photos were necessary, always with a resolution of 61Mpx. To capture the most inaccessible parts, it is often necessary to move the object more than once.

From the point cloud to the final texture.

The photos from the different series are combined resulting into a point cloud that will have the final volume with the mesh. Finally it is textured with the colour and light that the photos provide. The final realism is achieved with the finishing of the materials: matte, shiny, transparent, translucent, gold…
